Why we think this fund is best-in-class

Product

Provides diversified exposure to the U.S. preferred securities market, investing primarily in preferred stocks and subordinated debt securities. Preferred securities function as hybrid instruments, ranking lower than corporate bonds but higher than common equity in the capital structure, typically offering higher yields than traditional investment-grade credit. Preferred securities can be attractive because of the alpha opportunities in the diverse market, higher income potential than treasuries and investment grade credit, and diversification to other asset classes.

People

Managed by a seasoned team of four Portfolio Managers (Joe Bozoyan, Caryn Rothman, James Gearhart, and Jonas Grazulis) with an average of 20 years of industry experience. Leverages insights from Manulife's other credit and equity research analysts; Manulife as a whole has been managing preferred securities as an asset class since 2005 across multiple accounts.

Performance

The Fund would likely outperform in a robust stock market and during times when the Fed tends to ease rates. Contrarily, in a poor credit market, during a period of perceived risk or when the fed tightens its policy on rates, the Fund could experience weaknesses.

Process

Balances allocation across financial services, utilities and communication companies instead of following the broad market make-up, for which financial services companies account for two third of the total market. Employs clear sizing guidance to limit single issuer concentration - the average position size is about 2-3% with max position size set at 5%. Actively manage the duration exposure of the fund through adjusting allocation to fixed-to-floating rate securities and utilising US treasury hedges.

Cost
