Why we think this fund is best-in-class

Product

The fund targets multiple sources of income and low interest rate exposure from a global opportunity set with a diversified portfolio of bonds with a duration band of 0 to 3 years. The fund does not attempt to pursue the highest yield, but instead seeks the most favourable risk-adjusted returns and attempts to balance downside risks. The strategy took its current shape from 2017 onwards, while having a different mandate prior to it.

People

Experienced and high calibre 3 member portfolio management (PM) team led by PIMCO Group CIO Dan Ivanscyn. The team is supported by PIMCO’s Global Investment Grade Credit Team. The team employs a team-based approach whereby the decisions are consensus driven and not made by a single person.

Performance

The fund has generally outperformed its benchmark in most periods, since inception.

Process

Combination of top-down and bottom-up, benchmark-agnostic approach that enables the Income team to build a flexible portfolio with diverse sources of high quality yield and overall risk exposures that are in line with PIMCO’s overall views of the global economy and the markets. The fund also typically employs leverage through the use of derivatives. The fund also tends to have off-benchmark exposure to developed non-US and emerging market debt as well as non-agency mortgage debt.

How it fits in a portfolio

This fund may be appropriate for investors looking for a relatively conservative (ie. lower duration) option offering income and capital gain opportunities. This could be one component of a core bond portfolio, with its flexible approach and focus on income. Investors should be aware that the fund employs leverage and utilises derivatives as part of its investment strategy. There also tends to be significant exposure to off-benchmark holdings.
