WHAT IS PRIVATE CREDIT?
Private credit refers to non-bank lending, where private loans are provided to companies. Unlike traditional bank loans, private credit loans are more flexible - these loans typically include covenants/lender protection and can also be tailored to meet specific borrower needs. As these loans are not publicly traded, they tend to be less volatile and experience lower drawdowns compared to their public credit peers. Correspondingly, there is a lot less liquidity within this asset class as well.
With the retreat of traditional financing and the continued growth of private equity, private credit has emerged as a key source of funding. The size of the private credit market is now over US$1 trillion and is projected to continue growing strongly. At the same time, the development of the evergreen space within private markets have now made private credit strategies a lot more accessible to individual investors.
