What is a money market fund?

A money market fund is a mutual fund that invests in high-quality, short-term debt instruments and cash equivalents. These investments typically include Treasury bills (T-bills), commercial paper, and certificates of deposit (CDs), which are known for their liquidity and low risk.

Money market funds are designed to offer investors a relatively low-risk place to invest easily accessible cash while earning a modest return.

Latest market commentary (September 2025)

Investors remain focused on the US-China trade front, with the extended 90-day deadline set to expire on Nov 10. The continued dialogue between specialised working groups is a positive sign, keeping a worst-case scenario of immediate, escalating tariffs off the table.

US and Chinese officials wrapped up day 1 of their 4th meeting in 4 months in Spain on Sept 14. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent offered little detail on the conclusion of the meeting, rather than any major breakthrough on the tariffs, a reminder that underlying tensions continue to persist between the 2 countries.

This evolving trade backdrop creates a complex dilemma for the Federal Reserve. The renewed threat of tariffs could reignite inflationary pressures, complicating the central bank’s policy path at a time when other economic signals are softening. Officials, including those who spoke at the Jackson Hole symposium last month, have acknowledged the cooling labour market but remain highly attentive to inflation risks, stressing that their decisions will remain strictly data-dependent.

The August jobs report indicated a significant slowdown in hiring, with nonfarm payrolls adding just 22,000 jobs. Revised job numbers found that the US added 911,000 fewer jobs in the year preceding March 2025, amplifying concerns of the slowdown.  At the same time, the most recent Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for August showed that annual inflation ticked higher to 2.9%, driven by rising housing and food costs. With the labour market weakening while inflation remains stubbornly above the Fed's 2% target, policymakers face a difficult trade-off.

The Sept meeting was the sixth of the eight FOMC meetings in 2025, and the Fed has lowered interest rates to the 4.00 - 4.25% range. The next policy meeting will be held on 28 - 29 October, with the futures market currently indicating that 89.8% of traders think current interest rates will be lowered by 25 basis points as of 18 September, as seen on CME Group. 10.2% of traders expect interest rates to remain unchanged at the October meeting.

What are fixed deposits, and what do the rates mean?

A fixed deposit is an interest-bearing bank account that has a pre-set maturity date, meaning it can only be withdrawn after the predetermined set duration. For instance, if the fixed deposit rate in Hong Kong is stipulated to be 3.40% for a period of 3 months, it means that the deposited cash in the account will earn an interest rate of 3.40% per annum, pro-rata to 3 months’ value.

The advantage of fixed deposits is that savings are protected by the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board’s Deposit Protection Scheme. Each depositor is protected up to a maximum of HK$ 800,000 per bank (including both principal and interest).

However, it is important to note that fixed deposits come with a lock-in period. If there is a need for liquidity and you need to withdraw the principal before the maturity date, you will be required to pay a penalty or fee for early withdrawal according to the withdrawal policy and penalty rules.
