Latest bank savings and USD & HKD time deposit rates in Hong Kong
Latest market commentary (July 2026)
US employment cooled sharply in June. Nonfarm payrolls rose by just 57,000 against a 115,000 consensus, with May revised down to 129,000. The unemployment rate ticked down to 4.2%—but simply because labour force participation fell, so the drop reflected workers leaving the labour force.
The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose 4.1% year-on-year in May—extending its run above the central bank's 2% target beyond five years, mostly due to the impact of the US-Iran war on energy prices. Core PCE, which excludes food and energy and is typically steadier, was at 3.4% year-on-year.
At Chair Kevin Warsh’s first meeting on 17 June, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) held rates unchanged at 3.50%–3.75% as broadly expected, but the accompanying Summary of Economic Projections (the so-called “dot plot”) delivered a hawkish surprise: nine out of 18 participants projected at least one rate hike by year-end—a complete reversal of the March dot plot, which had penciled in a cut. The statement acknowledged the Middle East conflict but noted that "economic activity is expanding at a solid pace" and that "productivity growth and capital investment are strong."
Fed officials remain divided on how to weigh AI-driven investment. Governors Waller and Cook, and NY Fed President Williams, have flagged AI capex as an inflationary force; Warsh has framed the AI cycle as a positive supply shock—one he expects to lift productivity and wages over time without necessarily raising inflation.
At his first semiannual monetary policy testimony to Congress on 14–15 July, Warsh pledged that the Fed will restore price stability to its 2% target, but his rate path remains an open question. The July 28–29 FOMC also appears to be a likely “hold”, despite the resumption of hostilities in the Middle East and the oil price spike that followed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is a money market fund?
A money market fund is a mutual fund that invests in high-quality, short-term debt instruments and cash equivalents. These investments typically include Treasury bills (T-bills), commercial paper, and certificates of deposit (CDs), which are known for their liquidity and low risk.
Money market funds are designed to offer investors a relatively low-risk place to invest easily accessible cash while earning a modest return.

What are fixed deposits, and what do the rates mean?
A fixed deposit is an interest-bearing bank account that has a pre-set maturity date, meaning it can only be withdrawn after the predetermined set duration. For instance, if the fixed deposit rate in Hong Kong is stipulated to be 3.40% for a period of 3 months, it means that the deposited cash in the account will earn an interest rate of 3.40% per annum, pro-rata to 3 months’ value.
The advantage of fixed deposits is that savings are protected by the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board’s Deposit Protection Scheme (DPS). Each depositor is protected up to a maximum of HK$ 800,000 per bank (including both principal and interest).
It is important to note that fixed deposits come with a lock-in period. If there is a need for liquidity and you need to withdraw the principal before the maturity date, you will be required to pay a penalty or fee for early withdrawal according to the withdrawal policy and penalty rules.
