Latest market commentary (Dec 2024)

Heading into the final Fed meeting of the year, which is scheduled on 18 Dec, bond traders are looking for another interest-rate cut, but no more than 25 basis points. Futures markets currently predict an 84% chance of the central bank cutting interest rates by a quarter point, according to the CME FedWatch tool. There is also a remaining probability that suggests the possibility of a pause in rate cuts. This forecast follows rate cuts announced in the Sep and Nov meetings, which brought the rate to a range of 4.50-4.75%.

US job growth in November surged after the employment market was constrained by hurricanes and strikes last month. This may not signal a significant shift in labour market conditions, but should give the Federal Reserve leeway to cut interest rates again this month.

Core personal consumption expenditures price index, or what people referred to as the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, accelerated in October year on year. Stripping out volatile food and energy items, the Core PCE reading increased 2.8% from October 2023, and 0.3% from a month earlier, according to Bureau of Economic Analysis data out 27 Nov. A good part of that acceleration was due to the impact of higher stock prices on the calculation. These gauges might help explain the seemingly more cautious approach of the central bank to lowering interest rates, in line with traders’ expectation of a mild cut closing off the year.

Why do people invest in money market funds?

  1. Maintaining an emergency fund: Life is full of uncertainties, and having a liquidity fund can be a personal safety net to get through any unforeseen emergencies, such as a period of unemployment or an unbudgeted large expense. The general rule of an emergency liquidity reserve is about 3 to 6 months of monthly expenses. The accessibility and flexibility of money market funds make them a good option while not having to sacrifice yields. Please be aware that while the risk is relatively low, money market funds are not principal-protected and may incur losses.
  2. Short-term investment/life goals: Money market funds could be useful for short-term goals such as saving for a vacation or wedding. It is important to ensure the investment holds its value over a shorter time period.
  3. Parking of assets: Money market funds are also good vehicles to park or transfer assets when you are deciding on how to deploy your funds for the longer term. We do not recommend money market funds as the investment vehicle for your long-term wealth goals. Although their stability might be appealing in the short run, over the long-term their returns would be much lower than stocks and bonds.
